What is Internet Week?
"Internet Week New York is a week-long festival of events saluting New York's thriving Internet industry and the many talented companies, organizations and innovators creating the future of online media! Internet Week New York is produced by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences in cooperation with the City of New York and the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting."
June 3rd - 10th - http://www.internetweekny.com
Why get involved?
So far, it's mostly internet industry and web 2.0 companies hosting events. New York's nonprofit and grassroots internet community is severely underrepresented. There are tons of us, and there's no reason we can't join in. Internet Week's organizers have adopted an "open beats closed" policy: anyone who wants to host an event is welcome to add it to the event calendar.
Internet week is the perfect opportunity to make ourselves heard by New York's digital establishment. Add your event to Internet Week, and let them know we're here. Let's advance the cause of the democratic management of cyberspace, and show how the web can be used to support local democracy.
Who's working here?
Add your group to this list, then add your event to the Internet Week Event Board.
Connecting.nyc, Inc.
We're a not-for-profit working to establish .nyc as a community managed top-level domain name. Full disclosure: Internet Week is our coming out party, and increasing participation by other community groups is part of our strategy for making ourselves heard.
One idea we had was to have a single "Democracy Space" where workshops, conferences, and other activities might occur around the idea of community organizing and the web. But, it will be just as effective to have Democracy Space function as a distributed space, with events around the city. Connect to our evolving Internet Week plans.
