• About our Project

Composting at the Fort Greene Green Market is brought to you by a hearty crew of volunteers from three neighboring community gardens. We take turns hauling your food scraps away and use it in our gardens' compost systems. This year with a grant from the Citizens Committee for NYC, we were able to purchase a Worksman Tricycle to help us haul your food scraps, and it has made a big difference to our project! Big thanks go to CCNYC, Worksman Cycles and Council on the Environment for making the trike possible. We also owe a debt of gratitude to Sammy's Deli. If they didn't store our bins for us there is no telling where we'd be.

We always need help: We aren't body builders! A full garbage bag of wet food scraps is more than most of us can lift comfortably (and a really full bag doesn't close properly. Ew!) so we need everyone to make sure that bags are rotated out when they get to be 3/4 full.

If you want to get really involved, and can commit to a regular schedule of putting out bins or hauling compost on the super cool bike, see http://www.openplans.org/projects/compost/ for more information about how to volunteer.

PS, if you're interested in getting a compost pickup going at your local market, we'd love to help you get organized! See http://www.openplans.org/projects/compost/ for more information.
