Resource Sheet with other Locations
last modified October 24, 2007 by amandabee
Community members have volunteered to bring you this list and reduce
waste in Brooklyn and NYC. You don't have to bring your waste to the market to compost it: below is a list of sites we know about in Brooklyn that accept food waste for composting year round. Some sites also make finished compost available for
public use. We're working hard to keep this up to date, but please contact Alice or Amanda at
http://www.openplans.org/projects/compost if you see an error.
Food waste can be dropped off at the Fort Greene Farmers Market, Corner of Dekalb and Washington Park, every Saturday between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm. There is a labeled pail with a lid and you are asked to dump waste but do not put any trash or plastic bags in the pail. The waste is brought to one of the three local gardens (2-5) listed below or sent back with local farmers.
Greene Acres Community Garden
Corner of Franklin and Greene Avenues. Greene Acres accepts food waste
throughout the year. Compost membership is $5--get your own key and
drop off compost whenever you want. Open hours are posted on the gate,
and the public can drop off compost any time the garden is open.
Contact Amanda at 718 783 5984 or stop by when the garden is open.

green plastic bin for food scraps and there are open wooden bins for
yard waste. The area is open whenever the park is open (sunrise to
sunset). Tools (pitchforks, shovels, rakes, gloves, etc) are available
in the park house when attendants are on duty. We ask that people
bringing food scraps take leaves from the open bins to mix with their
food in the green food compost bin; and participate in general compost
area maintenance. People interested in composting at should contact us,
