Proposed Regulations

Here are some of the ideas that have been put forward for how the namespace might be regulated

Minimal Regulation

• Standard first-come, first serve approach to allocating names 

Taxonomy

• Certain civic names - schools.nyc, hospitals.nyc - would be set aside as a special class of names
• A system for community boards naming - e.g.: queens3.cb.nyc
• Previous research and arguments on this regulation from .nyc's legacy wiki:

Physical Presence

• Nameholders would be required have to be located in the city in order to be able to own names

Electoral

• Nameholders would acquire names thorugh an electoral process, and would need to campaign every so often to retain the name

Web Standards

• Metadata and social networking protocols ensure that .nyc are better able to talk to each other and share data
