Domain Name Regulations
last modified May 15 by mattcoop
One of the most contentious areas of this project is how we will regulate the namespace. Start the discussion on the Governance mailing list
Proposed Regulations
Here are some of the ideas that have been put forward for how the namespace might be regulated
Minimal Regulation
- Standard first-come, first serve approach to allocating namesĀ
Taxonomy
- Certain civic names - schools.nyc, hospitals.nyc - would be set aside as a special class of names
- A system for community boards naming - e.g.: queens3.cb.nyc
- Previous research and arguments on this regulation from .nyc's legacy wiki:
Physical Presence
- Nameholders would be required have to be located in the city in order to be able to own names
Electoral
- Nameholders would acquire names thorugh an electoral process, and would need to campaign every so often to retain the name
Web Standards
- Metadata and social networking protocols ensure that .nyc are better able to talk to each other and share data
