  • Interest in a sprint at the DC Conference?

    from vedawms on 2008-05-13 16:08
Would people be interested in a sprint after the DC conference is over?

I can see a few areas where we could make a dent:

Write documentation if we have some that is missing. I know the 3.0 tutorial
that David Convent is working on hasn't been published yet, maybe he'll need
some help on that. Other general documentation work is also an option.

Brainstorm on possible tools that might help the theming story. I haven't
tried CSS Manager or SubSkins, but maybe there's additional integration with
those tools and the ZMI that could be done (portal actions, portal
quickinstaller, skin layers, etc.) that could be done to make it easier for
newbies and expose that stuff in a single location.

We've got a new utiilty here at ONE/NW that enables us to see at a glance if
a site is in debug mode, if it has cachefu enabled, if mailhost settings are
on, etc., just to expose those things. Maybe people have some ideas on how a
utility like this can be used specifically for theming.

Think about a TTW way to move viewlets around and create new viewlet
managers. Basically, a scaled up tool that makes the most of
@@manage-viewlets and talks directly to the filesystem (wishful thinking?).

Talk about Deliverance. Get a clear story out to the Plone community of what
its real purpose is. From what I can tell, it doesn't address the average
skinner's use case, but if it can, let's find out. Maybe it can?

Trey mentioned a tool for swapping out banners easily and adding metadata,
etc. Might need clarification on this.

The truth is, theming is damn hard right now, and if we don't stand up for
ourselves and find a solution to make it easier, it's not going to happen. I
hope that people are interested in at least talking about the things we can
    do to lower the bar.

Ideas welcome. If so, send your ideas forth, I'll collect them on
openplans, and we'll go from there.

    Thanks,

The banner manager that I was thinking of would just be a simple tool to
allow uploading of banner images separate from other images, activating and
deactivating them, changing display parameters (random, random by section,
static, etc.), showing photo credits and captions where appropriate, and so
forth. Depending on my schedule, this may get built (or found, if it already
exists somewhere -- looking at the existing ad banner management tools is on
my list) by the time DC rolls around, but I imagine that there are other
widgets of this sort which could be useful to folks.
