[TOPP trac] #2650: Mail to list manager address gets delivered FROM list manager and hides the original sender
from "The Open Planning Project"on Jun 30, 2008 11:46 AM #2650: Mail to list manager address gets delivered FROM list manager and hides the original sender ---------------------------+------------------------------------------------ Reporter: pw | Owner: egj Type: defect | Status: new Priority: important | Milestone: Component: [unspecified] | Version: irie!!! (live on www.openplans.org) Keywords: | Confirmation: Blockedby: | Time_to_complete: Blocking: | ---------------------------+------------------------------------------------ If you send an email to the manager address of a listen list, like foo- list-manager@..., the mail gets delivered to all the administrators of the list. That's expected behavior. But: * The delivered email has its From header set to the list manager address * The original sender is not listed in the headers. (It's only preserved in the body, as "Inquiry from: <address>" * The original sender's server, and anything prior to theman, is not listed in the Received: headers. This is bad because: * if the list manager address gets spam, it really looks to the list admins like openplans.org is the origin of the spam. * if it's NOT spam, a list admin who wanted to reply would probably click "reply" in their mail client - but the reply address would be foo-list- manager@openplans. He/she would have to manually copy the "Inquiry from:" address from the body and reply to that. This is not how people expect to use email. Proposal: 1. We should preserve the original From and Received headers 1. We can then remove the "Inquiry from" line from the body 1. We could prepend something to the subject like [foo-list- manager@openplans] so the list admins know why/how they got this mail -- Ticket URL: <http://trac.openplans.org/openplans/ticket/2650> The Open Planning Project <http://www.openplans.org> Trac - The Open Planning Project
