you shouldn't have to manually add the membrane tool.  you should be  
able to get everything installed by using the portal_setup tool, you  
have to install (by importing all steps) both the membrane and the  
remember profiles, in that order.  burdensome, i know.

rebuilding the site from scratch would make it a bit easier... you  
have to choose both the membrane and the remember profiles from the  
set of extension profiles when you create the site.  it's exactly the  
same thing as doing it via the portal_setup tool after the site  
exists, however.
