Member registers successfully but can't log in (Sign-in failure)

I've associated my custom remember type with the "member_auto_workflow"
workflow. A member can now register, but when I try to log in with the new
member information, I get a "Sign-in failure" with message like"
You are not currently logged in. Your user name and/or password may be
incorrect.
