  • Pair design

    from rpenate on 2008-04-25 15:32
    Hey y'all,

Our developer peers have a long-established practice of pair
programming a so when I rediscovered this article in UX Magazine about
pair design I felt inclined to share it with you all. We have a soft
tradition of doing pair design—Carly and Phil on Woonerf designs,
Bryan and Sonali on wiki improvements, Carly and Chris on
BlockPartyNYC, to name a few recent examples—and I was wondering what
you've all thought, if anything, of pair experiences thus far.
    Helpful? Harmful? Worth further exploration?

In the few experiences I've had with pairing, I've really liked it.
Even though I fall into the "novice" category that the article talks
about, I think I've had some good ideas, and have definitely learned a
    lot.

+1 for doing this more often.

I don't have a lot of experience with pairing, and have historically
been a little skeptical of the practice.

That said, my experiences pairing with Carly on GAPCo / TOPP for
design issues, or with Chris Abraham and Anil on BlockpartyNYC for UX
issues (especially with Screen Sharing over iChat - that kicks all
kinds of booty) have been really positive.

I'm definitely game to try this more, to see if it ends up being a
      useful tool for our team.

This is a really great article. I am all for working in collaborative
teams this way decisions are quick and getting consent, encouragement
and direction moves a project along a lot quicker.
Sometimes people with the same skill and sometimes people with
different skills sitting together and hashing it out always helps.

Designers traditionally don't do this - be it creative prowess,
imagination or sheer ego there has always been this idea of a magic
and secret in the success of a good campaign. But now with the high
influence of technology in what we build the ideas and influences of
the developer groups have spilled over making it very very exciting
for those of us who are open to it!

My current experience at TOPP is a lot less on this footing, which is
fine cause of the nature of the projects and work. But I am always
open to it and have done a lot of it over the last 4 years! It works
really well when two people can hand back and forth concrete tasks. Or
in the case of Bryan and me where we sit down and really make sure we
hit all the user needs etc. etc.

Rollie thanks for the article! :)
