As you all probably know by now, Andy is starting at the office on Monday. Julia asked me if there was any reading we required/ recommended for him, so I figured I'd post that to the mailing list for ideas. This could include books, periodicals, blogs, or specific articles. While we're at it, are there any books or periodicals people would like to see in the Design Library in the loft? —R

So far on Andy's reading list I am including Designing for the Social Web by Joshua Porter. Nick bought it for the office a while back because he loves the guy's blog and highly suggested the book to me. I just got around to reading it (because of having to to find stuff for Andy) and I think it's really good. I highly suggest everyone on the team read it. I am also considering the strangely relevant Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud because it provides a very good framework for thinking about four-dimensional design problems and is also short and fun. This one would obviously be very optional, but it is one of my favorite books. It was, surprisingly enough, assigned to me in a really pretentious 'post-structuralist semiotics' class in college. I have a personal copy of this if anyone is interested. I think Sonali already read it... did you like it? Any other suggestions? —R On Aug 6, 2008, at 3:25 PM, Rolando Penate wrote: > As you all probably know by now, Andy is starting at the office on > Monday. Thanks for organizing this, Rollie. A few of my favorites: 37signals mania: * "Defensive Design for the Web" (we have it somewhere) * "Getting Real". not so much about design, but about process. A must read. We have this here too. * Signal vs. Noise: http://37signals.com/svn/ "Designing the Obvious: A Common Sense Approach to Web Application Design" by Robert Hoekman Jr. We have a copy here in the office. "Don't Make Me Think! A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability" by Steve Krug -- very good, and a quick read. I have a copy I can bring in. Bokardo http://bokardo.com Joshua Porter, author of Designing for the Social Web, which Rollie mentioned. -- Nick On Aug 7, 2008, at 3:32 PM, Rolando Penate wrote: > So far on Andy's reading list I am including Designing for the > Social Web by Joshua Porter. I am a little late on this topic - but Medium is the Message by Marshall McLuhan has always been a good book on the basics for what we do. There is a ton of criticism on it but its good to cover it and believe in it before criticizing it! =) sonali On Aug 7, 2008, at 3:32 PM, Rolando Penate wrote: > So far on Andy's reading list I am including Designing for the > Social Web by Joshua Porter. Sonali, you'll be pleased to hear the "Understanding Comics" is actually strongly based upon McLuhan, "Medium is the Message" in particular. It's prominently mentioned and explored. :) —R On Aug 15, 2008, at 2:31 PM, Sonali Sridhar wrote: > I am a little late on this topic - but Medium is the Message by > Marshall McLuhan has always been a good book on the basics for what > we do. I haven't, but I did just order these for the library: http://www.amazon.com/Designing-Interfaces-Patterns-Effective-Interaction/dp/0596008031/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1 http://www.amazon.com/Designing-Interaction-Creating-Applications-Devices/dp/0321432061/ref=pd_sim_b_8 Do you want me to add that other one to the next book order? —R On Sep 11, 2008, at 1:21 PM, Andrew Cochran wrote: > Has anyone read this? > > <5166VG3Q70L._SL500_AA240_.jpg> > > > http://www.amazon.com/Designing-Visual-Interfaces-Communication-Techniques/dp/0133033899 >
