  • two proposed talks

    from k0s on May 29, 2008 10:33 AM
I have two ideas for talks I could give basically anytime:

    * computational plasma physics: aka what I worked on before I started at TOPP. I'll give a brief overview of the methodology of simulating plasma on the computer, from the equations involved to computational issues. I don't really have an agenda, but assuming I can remember the equations I'll probably write them down and discuss why they're interesting to model and discuss a few computational techniques that I am familiar with. I'll probably only superficially touch on why simulating these equations is interesting. For this talk, I'll need something to write and probably a computer that hooks up to the projector.

    * The Imperium Cycle -- an exiting new adventure in time: I'm working on a work of fiction tentatively titled The Imperium Cycle, set in a dystopic universe where the main characters travel in time. I'll probably briefly cover the plot, but more I'll just be reading passages I particularly like and tying them together loosely, so it will be more like a reading than a talk. I won't really need anything for this talk but I'll probably read from my computer and will need either an internet connection or to download the files ahead of time. I'll also probably touch on writing in general. I could also give a talk on writing methodology, but would probably need at least a little time to prepare for that one.

I plan on doing both of these fairly improvised, with as much audience participation as people want to give. I don't plan on making slides and generally plan on doing as little as possible up front. The advantage is I can do these any time. The disadvantage is that there is no take home material.

Would people be interested in either or both of these?

+1 if you don't expect me to understand the equations. (i.e., all I'd
want is a general overview and some pretty results). Others more
academically inclined might feel otherwise, however.

+1. This sounds like a good break from our day to day activities. I'd
    love to hear this one.

      General review: yes

Pretty results: don't count on it. If I have time I'll try to get the PTSG codes working on some laptop that can do projector (I assume mine can, somehow). But if recent history has taught me anything its that I probably won't have time. I'll probably show some pictures from my master's thesis, maybe more, but like I said I intend to do as little up front as possible.

The added "bonus" (or not) is that you get to hear me do the characters' voices. Which could be a good thing. Or really annoying. Maybe we could do this one on the deck or in the PP so as not to disturb "serious" work?

no take home instructions to build my own pain ray? :(

sounds cool. hope somebody records these.
