  • how exclusive is TOPP Talks?

from David Winslow on Jul 30, 2008 09:58 AM
    Hey all,

Yesterday someone asked me where some slides from a talk Nick gave at
the recent Creative Commons salon that was hosted at TOPP were. I
didn't know, since the talk wasn't a 'TOPP Talk'. But after a little
digging I found that those slides were indeed in the topp-talks folder
in SVN, but weren't listed anywhere on the wiki. I went ahead and added
a link in case anyone is looking for them in the future, but now I
wonder whether that was the right thing to do.

While I didn't make it down for the actual talks, I think this
presentation was mostly a LivableStreets/The Open Planning Project
promo, with some tie-ins to Creative Commons since we use their licenses
for some of our content. Promotional material isn't really what I had
in mind when TOPP Talks was starting out, and it probably makes sense to
have a separate archive for that kind of thing rather than lumping it in
with talks on Zen and music theory. (Further along this vein, there
should probably be some slide templates that look like
    (LivableStreets|OpenGeo|OpenPlans.org|Melkjug|TOPP) rather than
    recycling the TOPP Talks template.)

Anyway, just trying to figure out some policy to avoid having talks out
there that people can't find because they're listed in the wrong place
or not listed at all. What do you think?

In terms of the actual archived forms of presentations in SVN, I think
the most straightforward thing to do is to just have a
/svn/presentations directory to put slides for TOPP Talks, as well as
things like this CC talk or any other presentations we do. When
people are looking for slides from a talk, I suspect it'll be
pointless overhead to force them to stop and think "was this a TOPP
Talk, or a Promotional Talk, or a Training Presentation, or a Talk At
a Conference" in order to know where to look.

Meanwhile the TOPP Talks wiki (and this mailing list) should probably
be limited to proper TOPP Talks. So while slides for Chris's talk on
Zen and Nick's talk on LivableStreets would both live in the same SVN
directory, only the former would be listed on the TOPP Talks wiki,
announced on the TOPP Talks mailing list, and transcribed or otherwise
recorded on #topp-talks to be posted back on the wiki with a link to
    its slides.

And a strong +1 on having some branded slide templates rather than
reusing the TOPP Talks template, though that's more for the sake of
the presentation than for the sake of TOPP Talks' conceptual
integrity, so I think it's reasonable to "merely" encourage people to
generate and use those templates but leave it as a choice for
    presenters.

Yeah, I agree -- we actually do have a "presentations" directory in
      SVN: https://svn.openplans.org/svn/presentations/

For the CC salon talk, I just used the TOPP talks template and svn out
of laziness :) +1 for separating these things out as you guys describe.

Okay, I'm moving the topp-talks directory there in that case.

Will that break the links to the existing talks? Notably the ones
given at the end of the talks themselves...

Yes, links will be broken. I don't know what you're talking about wrt
links given at the end of the talks though.

We put a link to our talk on the last slide -- not sure if other
people have done this with topp talks in the past.

If so, then an apache redirect for everything in the topp talks
directory would be in order. This is good practice, in general, when
we move potentially public files after the fact (although not usually
              with stuff inside SVN).

I have a pointer I can put back at that location -- I sort of doubt
that anyone copied it down (I hope I'm wrong!), and I updated the link
in the TOPP Blog post about it with the new location. It might be
clearer (for our own sake) to keep the directories as David put them,
so we don't have a topp-talks dir in the SVN just for the sake of
            preserving links to one file.

Alternatively, we could just do an apache rewrite just to redirect
this one file, keeping SVN clean.

Slides currently live in a few different places. Some are attachments to
TOPP Talks wiki pages, some are directories in SVN. There's even one
lucky talk that's an attachment to a blog post on topp-office. So we
      don't already have this.

Anyway, we're more than half non-techies, and I'd wager that a lot of
those non-techies are people who would want to look for slides (in the
case I'm speaking of, Vanessa was collecting some information to put
together some promotional material) so a directory in SVN may not be
      sufficient.

Another thing is that we probably want to make promotional stuff
accessible to non-TOPPers, TOPP Talks and training stuff less so.

fwiw, this is what I had in mind. TOPP Talks conceptual integrity isn't
that important to me, but the conceptual integrity of public facing
      stuff is.

Slides in SVN can be viewed through the web if the svn:mime-type
        property is set correctly.

Yeah, with s5 slides, you need to be sure to set the svn:mime-type to
text/html for index.html and text/css for all the css files.

What I really meant was that SVN directory listings aren't tremendously
accessible. It would be better to have something with real titles
instead of filenames, and author and date information inline with the
listing. (Like I said, this whole discussion started from me digging
            through SVN for Vanessa).

I don't know, that sounds a bit YAGNI to me. Having all slides in one
place, plus having that metadata available for true TOPP Talks on the
TOPP Talks wiki, would be a big improvement over the current
organization, so I'd suggest starting there and seeing whether
              anything more is needed.
