  • We had two people come in today to take a look at Livable Streets. The testing method used was a mix of task oriented testing with observational testing.

Both users were taken to the StreetsBlog as the homepage. Both users are StreetsBlog readers by subscribing to the email digest. So they were both familiar with the content but not really active on the current blog.

 Areas of the site covered
William (age 61)

Homepage

  • Found it calming, enjoyed the blue.
  • Not that familiar with the site design as he subscribes via email

    • Happy to see that the page was still in a blog format.
    • Found it legible but crowded
  • Was a little upset about the blue - felt it looked very heavy. Was particularly not into the blue bars in the blog matching the blue background - said it felt like "lead"
  • "Flat"

Top Navigation

  • Really liked it as he was only familiar with StreetsBlog.
  • Expected "YourStreets" to be connected with SB or SF.

Liked the integration of the Blog, Films, Wiki and Projects - said he would be more inclined to use project now that he knows its part of the more credible StreetsBlog group.

Sidebar
    • Enjoyed the sidebar
    • Loved that he could check out links - but did mention that it could overwhelm people
    • If he searched by category that he would be interested in seeing if it pulled from films and blogs as a combination of results.
    • Understood what each category (Featured, Editor's picks...) meant.
He missed the "categories" section.  If I asked him to find something on the page that was located in the sidebar, he could not find it.
    • Was excited about the Feature block
    • Thought Ongoing was a place to expect the "Recent Activity"
    • Links and Categories over whelmed him
    •

  • The sidebar had a little too much information for him. The width of the sidebar bothered him - two columns of links were too much to digest. Felt the sidebar was overpowering the main area.
  • Overall, he liked the information in the sidebar (felt it was important), but he didn't like the layout.
  • Was confused by the "Comments Tab" meant.
  • Again, couldn't find content placed in sidebar
Sign in / Create an account
Found the sign in easy and was happy to see it on the top. Understood that he would sign in to entire site, although he didn't know what that site would be called.
Unsure what he was signing in to (didn't know about/couldn't see Livable streets)
  • Was skeptical but then went on to finding the sign in process useful as it builds trusted community.
  • Once signed in, understood that it was a universal sign in

Search Couldn't find it (because it wasn't there....).  He would like it where it was originally located (under tabs in the top right).

Couldn't find it (again, it didn't exist)
Wanted search in top right corner under tabs
StreetsBlog/ Commenting
  • Overall liked the design
  • Commenting process was simple
  • Expected to be able to add a picture next to name
  • Thought TA was the organization behind SB
  • Clicked on "Dialogue box" to get into the comments section.  I think he hissed the "add a comment" link at the bottom of the post, but he wasn't too concerned with reading the actual posts.
  • Was very skeptical of its design but is still a follower of the content.
  • Found commenting easy
  • Vacuum worked, understood what was happening
  • Missed "leave a comment" the first time, found it the second time.
StreetFilms  Did not spend too much time in it

Did not spend time in it but was very aware of the Films that were being done

StreetsWiki
Didn't touch it

Doesn't know what "wiki" means.  Confused by name.
 YourStreets
  • Got a lot of it - was excited to participate.  Had no problem giving up his personal information.
  • Surfs around, finds a project he likes
  • Hit an error page.  Understood what it was, what was happening.  Felt ok overall.
  • Understands that "Sign in" is universal.
  • Wants search underneath Main Tabs
  • Has a hard time figuring out how to "Get involved with the project" Clicks on "mailing lists" first.  Finally finds "join a project"
  • Was excited a whole lot more by the site when he realized that he could start her own streets project and get a movement going.
  • Immediately understood "YourStreets" potential.
  • Didn't know what "keep me logged in" meant
  • Didn't know what "choose your homepage" meant
  • Didn't know what "listed" meant
