LIFT PARKING MANDATES NYC

ENDING MANDATORY PARKING MINIMUMS

ENDING MANDATORY PARKING MINIMUMS —

FOR HOUSING

Parking mandates drive up the cost of developments and make building affordable housing less feasible. In San Diego, after lifting mandates, 1,500 affordable housing units were created in just one year.

FOR COMMUNITIES

Mandating new parking in buildings encourages car ownership and takes up valuable space, which in turn makes neighborhoods less walkable and more isolated from robust transit options.

FOR CLIMATE

Parking mandates facilitate a culture of car dependence that saddles New Yorkers with the harmful effects of greenhouse gas emissions, the heat island event from paved surfaces, and flood-prone neighborhoods.

What are
parking
mandates?

Put simply, parking mandates are zoning rules that require a certain amount of off-street parking to be built in new apartment buildings or offices. As crazy as it seems, as a law, in most of New York City, the city government requires developers to build parking spaces, regardless of whether New Yorkers actually want or need them. They have been part of the city’s Zoning Code for decades and haven’t been reformed citywide since John F. Kennedy was president.

Department of City Planning has proposed fully eliminating residential parking mandates in the City of Yes Zoning for Housing Opportunity text amendment. It is crucial for New Yorkers to show strong support at this time and tell City leaders that we want a future free of mandatory parking minimums and their negative impacts.
